The 12 #automated RTGs are cabinless, with the cranes operating automatically over the container stack.

Manual control is carried out via four Liebherr remote operator stations. The cranes feature Wi-Fi mesh network communications, a decentralised system that sees multiple access points positioned throughout the yard providing a high-speed and stable data network “delivering the required latency and high-bandwidth communication necessary for remote control”.

The contract to supply the cranes was won in 2021.

The Port of Duqm is situated in the south-east of Oman and located close to major oil and gas as well mining projects.

Port of long beach SSA Marine retrofits RTG cranes to run on electric

Longshore workers are using nine electric cranes to stack containers at one of the Port of Long Beach’s busiest terminals in a large-scale demonstration project, as the port and its partners pursue zero emissions cargo handling by 2030.

The demonstration at SSA Marine Pier J is part of the Zero-Emissions Terminal Equipment Transition Project, which is funded in part by a $9.7m California Energy Commission (CEC) grant.

The port, the CEC and the utility Southern California Edison (SCE) are partnering on the project to put into daily service 21 human-operated vehicles that are zero- or near-zero emissions at three of the port’s marine terminals and with trucking company Total Transportation Services to test their performance in a real-world setting.

As part of the project, SSA retrofitted nine of its existing ZPMC diesel-powered rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes to run on electricity, recently completing the last one. The conversion equipment was provided by Cavotec and installed by SSA and the main electrical power equipment and installation was by SCE.

“In the decades since we created the Green Port Policy, our ambitions have grown from cleaning the air for our community to showing the world it’s possible to do that everywhere,” said Mario Cordero, executive director, Port of Long Beach. “These demonstrations are designed to commercialise heavy-duty zero-emissions equipment and vehicles to combat pollution but also to fight climate change, the effects of which we are seeing in the news almost every day.”

Sharon Weissman, president, Long Beach Harbor Commission, thanked SSA Marine, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and its partners for their collaboration on meeting green sustainability goals.

“The future is zero emissions, and we are going to continue to do everything we can to lead the industry,” she said.

“SSA is thankful for the opportunity to partner with the Port of Long Beach and the California Energy Commission to complete this project,” said Scott Hainlen, superintendent, SSA Terminals.

“We look forward to continuing our efforts in reducing emissions from all our operations in Long Beach.”

In 2017, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles approved an update to its Clean Air Action Plan, setting a goal of transitioning all terminal equipment to zero emissions by 2030 and drayage trucks by 2035.

The Zero-Emissions Terminal Equipment Transition project is anticipated to annually reduce greenhouse gases by more than 1,323 tons and smog-causing nitrogen oxides by 27 tons.

Imports, labour shortages, long distances – the hoist industry in Australia and New Zealand is surviving all of these

Imports, labour shortages, long distances – the hoist industry in Australia and New Zealand is surviving all of these and the pandemic as well. Julian Champkin reports.

Even so, the Ibis report tells us that the number of businesses in the Overhead Crane Manufacturing industry in Australia has remained steady over the past five years. And this despite Covid, which of course has not helped: “The COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent economic recession are likely to moderately affect the Overhead Crane Manufacturing industry. Industry operators are likely to face weak demand from the manufacturing, mining and building construction markets,” – mining of course is a major consumer of lifting equipment in Australia – “but it may derive some stimulus from infrastructure construction,” says the same source.

“Life is not too bad, at the moment. Since Covid came along the government has put a lot of subsidies into business. It waived the quarterly tax bill, to pump money into the economy and business; and brought in a Jobkeeper scheme to help affected businesses: if your turnover has gone down by 30% or more they give you A$1500 every two weeks for every person you employ, to help cover their wages. It has stopped now. The last payment was at the end of March; but it kept people going. Plus, there was a A$10,000 subsidy to all companies that qualified; for me, that was a Godsend. I still had work coming in, I was quite lucky to be getting the Jobkeeper money – most months I just crept past the qualifying barrier by a few percent. That lasted for a year, and as I say it really did help. So, from the point of view of small businesses like mine the government handled the pandemic reasonably well.”

There may be long-term consequences for his business, though: “Melbourne had a very long lockdown,” he says. [At the time of writing, (early June) a lockdown extension was on the cards.] “I am in regional Victoria – that is outside the Melbourne area – where we were allowed to travel. But they closed the South Australia border, which meant I couldn’t go there to do the installation work for a good and regular customer there, who makes solar panels. So, I supplied the hoist and the gantry equipment and he installed it himself. And when he discovered how easy it was to install, on the next order he said; ‘I will do the easy parts, the installation, you just supply me with the parts.” He has had dozens of cranes and installations from me in the past. From now on it looks like it will just be the cranes.”

So, in Australia the pandemic disruption is evolving into business as usual, if a slightly different business model.

It is a similar story in New Zealand. “Baker Cranes has been busy since coming out of Level 3 lockdown in April of last year,” said Ralph Bacon, project administrator of Baker Cranes. “We believe most of the other crane manufacturers in NZ are reasonably busy also. The market is small by international standards but it is quite competitive, and there is a range of crane suppliers, from those importing whole cranes from third world countries to those such as ourselves, who import components and manufacture steelwork here. Imported cheap hoists are not too much of a problem as a significant proportion of customers seem to feel more comfortable with established brands, especially the European ones.”

Six new cranes for pump manufacturer

Street Crane has manufactured and installed six new overhead cranes at the expanded production facility of engineering company Hayward Tyler.

Hayward Tyler, which engineers and manufactures motors and pumps for the energy sector, invested £20m into expanding its Luton facility into a ‘Centre of Excellence’, including more than doubling production capacity and expanding space by 30,000 sq ft.

Six new cranes for pump manufacturer

The six crane supplied by Street Crane comprised two 40t double girder cranes in the newly-extended section of the premises, and two 40t and two 25t double girder cranes to replace Hayward Tyler’s existing systems.

The cranes are used throughout the production process, including unloading materials through to the final equipment dispatch. They feature heavy-duty Street ZH hoists, and have been designed to optimise space in the new part of the facility, and to provide a high top hook position to give the optimum lifting height.

The ZX wire rope hoist has an ‘open plan’ hoist design that allows fast access to the key areas of the hoist transmission and structure, says Street, which enables maintenance to be conducted without major dismantling.

The cranes also include infrared anti-collision technology and are operated with radio remote control equipment.

Larry Redmond, special projects director for Hayward Tyler explained: “We view our assembly and test area as one big machine system and the cranes form a vital part of that machine, providing the appropriate lifting capability for the large motors and pumps we manufacture. The crane equipment is essential for all stages of the process including loading machines, as well as the assembly and testing of our products.

“As the cranes will be in operation for a considerable time period, one of our key selection criteria was maintainability. The modular design approach used by Street gave us confidence in the future availability of appropriate parts and service levels.

“Street’s ability to work in partnership with us was key to the success of this project. The team worked closely with us throughout the design process to ensure the cranes would be fit for purpose and that there was minimal impact on production when the replacement cranes were installed in the existing part of the factory.

“This required careful co-ordination with the main building contractor regarding removal and installation, including removing parts of the factory’s roof sheeting several times. This was all completed without fuss and is testament to the expertise of the individuals and companies involved.”

Chris Lindley-Smith, Street’s sales director, said: “Crucially for the client, we were able to work with the wider design and build team to install the cranes with minimal disruption, ensuring they could be accommodated effectively in both the new and existing building structure.”

Conductix-Wampfler powers grand Reunion

Conductix-Wampfler supplied power supply units to the world’s largest offshore gantry crane, which is being used to construct a new round around Reunion Island.

Conductix-Wampfler powers grand Reunion

The six-lane highway, which is due to be completed in 2018, will include a 5.4km-long viaduct off the coast of the island, in the Indian Ocean, designed to withstand cyclones and waves up to 10m high. The project is being completed by the French consortium Bouygues Travaux Publics, Vinci Construction Grands Projets, Dodin Campenon Bernard, and Demathieu Bard Construction.

The crane, which is being supplied by Enerpac, comprises two pairs of lifting traverses with a total width of 30m and has a load-bearing capacity of 4,800t. It is used for lifting, moving, and lowering concrete blocks, and is designed to withstand the tropical marine environment.

The crane manoeuvres the concrete blocks using a reeving hoist system, based on eight grooved drum winches, with the longitudinal movement controlled using a roller trolley system with two roller trolleys per lifting traverse. Each roller trolley is powered by an engine with hydraulic drive and planetary gears. The wheels run on two parallel rails, which are mounted onto the runway beam on the barge, and long-stroke cylinders affect the continuous lateral movement of the portal winches.

To power the crane, Conductix-Wampfler supplied six motor-driven cable reels for high loads. Two mono-spiral motor reels with a MAG Drive magnetic coupler provides the power for the longitudinal travel of the crane bridges on the barge, while four random wind reels power the load handling attachments.

Pintsch Bubenzer takes its foot off the brakes as it accelerates its business empire.

Sweden’s Dellner Group, Dellner Brakes, was a subsidiary acquired by German industrial braking manufacturer Pintsch Bubenzer in January 2018, in a deal that paved the way for the companies’ ongoing global expansion.

Pintsch Bubenzer makes high performance disc and drum brakes for cranes and other severe duty applications, as well as complementary products, such as emergency and storm brakes. Four months earlier, Dellner Brakes had acquired US brake and clutch company Gummi USA.

Momentum continued two years ago when Dellner Brakes, incorporating Italy’s Rima, bought German brake specialist JHS Jungblut in a move that immediately strengthened the company’s offering in the wind energy market, and enabled further global expansion, notably in the Far East.

“Much of our community has followed the journey of the Pintsch Bubenzer brand – Pintsch Bamag and Bubenzer Bremsen are steeped in history and eventually became the Pintsch Bubenzer business that Dellner acquired. It’s really been a journey that started generations ago and has found its way to this landmark moment,” said Joel Cox, president, Dellner Bubenzer USA.

The new-look Dellner Bubenzer was unveiled on Day One of the AIST (Association for Iron & Steel Technology) exposition (June 28 to July 1) in Nashville, US, where its logo, brand colors and values were visible for the first time.

The green-colored ‘DB’ logo is a tribute to the ‘D’ from Dellner and the previous branding, and the legacy ‘B’ from Bubenzer. They form together with a disc outline, since caliper brakes are core to the business. The logo has already been integrated into brake castings.

Cox was part of a global leadership trio that executed the entire brand overhaul, including Friederike Imhäuser, marketing manager, of Germany; and Edgar Roca, vice president of Dellner Brakes, of Texas. Governale Group, of Houston, Texas, provided branding expertise, having emerged as the chosen partner from a three-strong, worldwide shortlist. The team started planning at the beginning of the year and was shooting for an April to July launch, which was delivered on time.

“Our founding brakes (from Gerhard Bubenzer) were a shade of green many years before the famous red color, but the new look represents progression away from the legacy color to a bright, vibrant green that has been established and locked in; we plan to protect it for many years to come. Of course, to match, an interactive and easier-to-navigate website captures the new, global brand family,” added Cox.

The company has also overhauled its data sheets, catalogs, graphics and image libraries to complement the rebrand.

Dellner Bubenzer will deliver a presentation to the AIST Crane Symposium, this month (August 15-17) at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Cox and Mike Astemborski, executive sales manager, will deliver a paper entitled, ‘Lifting or lowering a load safely after failure or incident’.

The symposium, organized by AIST’s Cranes Technology Committee, delivers practical information and experiences from maintenance personnel, crane manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and engineering consultants with the sole intention of making Electric Overhead Traveling (EOT) cranes and their runways the safest, most reliable, durable machines in the steel industry.

In an open letter to its customers announcing the launch, Marcus Aberg, CEO, Kai Koelker, COO, and Jan-Willem Schoneveld, CCO, Dellner Bubenzer, said in a statement; ‘We are not changing who we are or how we produce, develop and serve you. We are simply coming together, stronger and united as one.

‘Our fresh new look embodies this unification with a new bold colour scheme that symbolizes safety, innovation and our vision for the future. This joining of multinational forces provides our customers an expansive global network of integrated products and services. Our alignment reinforces our worldwide scope with a local focus. By committing additional global resources to markets big and small we are stronger.’

Speaking exclusively to Hoist magazine, Cox said: “We really wanted to combine the five companies to gain a larger reach around the globe using our offices and strength in numbers.

“Dellner Bubenzer has moved forward with connecting the Americas like we have never done before. Our service channel has grown, providing help not only on commissioning but vital trainings for our clients. We really have a worldwide scope with a local focus now.

“We have expanded our core markets, Hoist & Cranes is very much a growth market for us and we love this business sector since it so closely relates to our legacy port and container handling market. Now that the innovation and products in our Dellner Bubenzer team allows us to show new ideas in the market. This will be a main focus for me to convey while at this year’s AIST Crane Symposium showing technology that was used in other industries that can be easily modified to purpose a missing link to the overhead crane industry.”

Pintsch Bubenzer takes its foot off the brakes as it accelerates its business empire.
