Kito has delivered 41 jib cranes and 43 EQ electric chain hoists to cargo oil pump and turbine manufacturer Shinko.
Shinko produces a broad range of steam turbines used in power plants and ships. Large turbines can weigh as much as 40t. Kito products are used throughout the firm’s manufacturing processes, from machining of turbine rotors through assembly and testing operation.
The EQ electric chain hoist is available in capacities of 125 kg to 1t and has standard lift of 3m.
K-based crane manufacturer Pelloby has produced and installed a bespoke turntable crane system at the Hereford foundry of super alloy manufacturer Special Metals.
Having ordered several overhead cranes, jib cranes and portal cranes from Pelloby in the past, Special Metals chose the manufacturer to provide this 16t turntable crane.
The new machine is designed to quickly rotate lengthy or cumbersome goods and materials when moving them between various workstation or storage positions.
The crane utilises a 360° slewing crab unit that could freely traverse along two double girder overhead beams.
The girders have a total span of 23470mm and are supported by existing gantry steelwork within the building.
A handheld radio control is used to operate the longitudinal motion of the beam, the crab movement, and the turntable’s rotation.
Two Eurobloc hoists with eight tonne safe working loads sit at either side of the crab unit, supporting loads of a combined total of 16t.
Marcus Upcott, engineering supervisor at Special Metals, said: “Where previously we might have had to use a forklift truck to ensure these goods were facing the right direction before being ready to use one of the existing cranes in the foundry, being able to rotate materials as they are being moved has helped improve our workplace efficiency immeasurably.”

In December 2020 China overtook the US to become the EU’s largest trading partner. (Source: Eurostat). In part that was due to China’s faster recovery from the Covid pandemic, but only in part. Asia is a growth market, and a growth area of production also: the term ‘tiger economy’ is still very far from irrelevant. Sany is a company that could be said to epitomise the size, opportunity and growth of the market in China—and to epitomise also the drive for overseas markets, embodied in the ‘belt and road’ initiative introduced by central government in 2013.
One of the most successful of China’s manufacturers, Sany produces heavy construction and industrial equipment, targeting the higher-quality end of the market. One of its specialisms is port lifting gear: gantry cranes, RTGs and RMGs, as well as empty container handlers. Louis Chan is sales and marketing manager for Sany port machinery.
“We serve primarily three kinds of customer,” he says. “Firstly, the stateowned terminals and yards, such as Shanghai and Qingdao.” It is well to keep in mind here the scale of China’s markets. Shanghai is the world’s busiest containerport; Qingdao is one of the ten busiest ports in the world. “Secondly, there are the port operators, such as Hutchinson, PSA and Maersk.” Singapore-based PSA operates ports as far apart as Antwerp, Halifax and Singapore itself. “A third market that is just opening up in China is the inter-modal, of transferring containers and goods between sea or riverport and rail or road. This has been a major sector in Europe for some years but in China it is a recent development, and an emerging one as the nation is engaged in expanding its rail transport system. As well as those three, a smaller amount of our business is to the private sector, where we have around one-quarter of the market share.”
Demand from customers, he says, is for two innovations in particular. “The first is for automation. Ports are very labourintensive, especially for port operators, and manpower costs money, in China as in the rest of the world. Nowadays all terminals and operators are hoping to reduce that expenditure, so automation is a trend.
“The second demand is for electrification and the move from diesel power. So we produce electric gantry cranes, and also electric reach-stackers. Our latest product in this sector addresses both those demands, for automation and for electric power. The ARTG, or automated rubber-tyred gantry crane, is a first in the sector. Our first blockorder was to the China Merchants port in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. The port is modernising and expanding, and we delivered 27 of this new product to them in October 2020.
“Similarly, we are providing ten electric powered empty container handlers for Singapore port. That, too, is the first batch of this product in the industry.
“The classic markets for Chinese manufacturing are South-east Asia and Africa; in the port machinery sector, that is true but only half of the truth. We are also very active in the USA. 20% of our port machinery sales are there; next year we hope to increase that to 30%. We have a very good portfolio which should help towards that target.” COSCO, the China state shipping line, is investing in ports in the Middle East, in UAE and Abu Dhabi, again as part of the belt and road policy.
“We have supplied mobile port equipment for those projects; we have not sent them gantry cranes yet but that may come.” China of course was the first county to be hit by the Covid-19. It also took strong and effective counter-measures early; so although companies took a hit around mid-year 2019 much of its economy is now back to near normal—and where many Western companies have struggled, some Chinese ones have had a remarkably good year. LX electric single beam suspension crane is used together with CD ₁ and MD ₁ electric hoists to form a single beam crane with rail operation. The running track of the suspension crane uses I-beam steel, and both ends of the main beam are suspended under the I-beam steel for front and rear operation. It is a small tonnage lifting equipment.
The treatment facility comprised of a number of dipping tanks in a 30m long line.
The crane system would need to lift a large cage containing production items from the floor to a height above the tanks and then travel along the line of tanks lowering the cage into any particular tank and releasing it. The crane would also have to recover and relocate the cage after treatment.
There were various constraints involved and Knowsley Engineering were particularly concerned that the system should make maximum use of the very limited headroom and the tight space available around the treatment tanks.
It was decided that a completely freestanding gantry system would be installed and that two cranes would be supplied each to carry a load of up to 5t.
Headroom was very tight so special twin hoist double girder overhead cranes were designed with each crane having the twin electric chain hoists mounted in fixed positions and suspended from brackets above the double girders.
Purpose-made lifting frames were designed to be suspended from the hoists and to easily locate on the lifting lugs of the cages. It was also decided that the system should be radio remote controlled with pendant plug-in backup and that two hand sets would be provided.
Each handset has a change over switch so that the hoists can be operated in tandem or independently.
The controls feature ‘monitored tandem lift’ as an additional safety feature in accordance with the very latest standards. If one hoist fails to operate when in tandem mode this feature prevents the other hoist from working.
Locomotive Storage Limited has purchased four Street cranes, placing them at a refurbished facility at Crewe Diesel Depot.
The main tenant is LNWR Heritage, which is responsible for overhauling main line steam locomotives, including boilers and carriages. The site includes a locomotive and carriage workshop, storage area, heavy lifting shop, and a boiler department that manufactures new components.
A 40t capacity Street crane and three new 5t overhead cranes are used to carry out heavy maintenance lifting and general workshop duties.
The three new Street cranes are all double girder construction and designed to maximise hook lifting clearance within the depot and feature ZX hoists making them quick and easy to maintain. Two of the cranes include anti-collision software ensuring optimum safety when used in tandem.
Bob Samples, Locomotive Storage’s Depot Manager, said: “The railway industry has used overhead cranes for many years to help lift heavy components and ensure that operations are efficient and safe as possible.

Continuous speed control offers greater productivity; it also reduces mechanical shocks through smoother starts and stops. Reducing the number and level of shocks to bridge, jib and structural components significantly increases the life of the structure. And continuous speed control allows the electric brake to be used first during deceleration before the mechanical brake is applied. Using the mechanical brake only as a holding (parking) brake increases its service life.
The hoist incorporates an electronic load sensor to prevent overloading, and slippage control with torque limiter. There is a 50% active damping system that reduces or eliminates the polygon effect, where chain links moving around sprockets produce the effect of a varying diameter and cause the linear speed of the chain also to vary. Maximum lifting speed is 30m/ minute, and maximum capacity is 2.5t.
Haslinger GmbH, based in based in Aldersbach-Uttighofen not far from Passau in Lower Bavaria, is a crane manufacturing partner of Stahl, which we mentioned earlier as German in spirit if American in ownership. Haslinger has recently completed an installation of an unusual type of wall-mounted travelling overhead jib crane that should perhaps be better known that it is. Unlike a conventional gantry crane, it runs on tracks on a single wall only, rather than on two parallel sets of tracks, and instead of a spanning girder it uses a jib to access the work area.
Making the concept a reality is all the more creditable in that cranes are only a part of Haslinger’s business. “We are a classic steel construction company. In addition to designing and building cranes we also manufacture, for example, stage sets, platforms, and staircase structures,” says Robert Seibold, head of crane technology at Haslinger. The company has been working with Stahl for more than 12 years, is its first certified crane manufacturing partner, and has taken over the entire steel construction part in joint projects.
A speciality is building customised crane systems using standard crane components from Stahl. “And, as you can see from this particular project, these are sometimes very special solutions,” says Seibold.
The double girder wall-travelling cranes replace existing systems in a hall in which large tools to produce car body components are inspected and prepared. The hall already contained older wall-travelling cranes, each with a lifting capacity of 5.0t, but they were no longer able to cope with future requirements and were therefore to be replaced by new cranes, each capable of lifting 8.0t.
“Compared to overhead travelling or suspension cranes, such cranes are rarely required,” says Seibold. Here, though, they gave more flexibility and performance over a large area. The four wall-travelling cranes serve as a supplement to an existing more conventional bridge crane and create a further plane of movement for multi-layered work processes. With a jib length of 8.4m each and a crane runway length of 80m, the new cranes can reach almost every point in the 1,600m2 hall. The wall-travelling cranes can therefore serve all work areas simultaneously without having to use the main crane, which may not be immediately available because it is needed in another part of the hall.
The project was divided into two construction phases, with two wall-travelling cranes being installed on one side of the hall in each phase. “We had already prepared and reinforced the crane runways beforehand so that they could carry the loads of the new cranes,” says Seibold.
Haslinger chose an SH 5025-20 electric wire rope hoist with a reduced safe working load (SWL) of 8.0t and a lifting height of 6.0m from Stahl’s standard range as the hoist for one of the two double girder wall-travelling cranes. The SH series wire rope hoists come in five sizes with 27t SWL variants from 500kg to 32,000kg. The compact, low-maintenance solutions can be used for stationary lifting operations but here they were on an overhead trolley that has a maximum travel speed of 10m/min.
Although all hoists used in this project are standard wire rope hoists, they were customised according to the customer’s wishes and equipped with additional safety technology. “The wire rope hoists normally achieve a maximum lifting speed of 10m/ min. However, the customer wanted the speed to be halved, which we solved with an intermediate gear. A lifting speed of now 5m/min now gives even higher precision when lifting and lowering loads,” says Seibold.
An essential component is the Stahl SMC 22 multi-controller for continuous load measurements. It has automatic load control that immediately switches off the hoist in the event of an overload. The SMC also records a wide range of operating data in real time, including the full-load operating hours and the number of motor switching operations. The operating data can be read out and evaluated quickly and easily on a PC or laptop using Stahl’s ConfigTool.
“The prescribed annual calculations of the service life of a hoist can also be carried out very accurately with the SMC. In addition, if there should ever be an incident with a crane, the recorded data may make it possible to trace the causes,” says Seibold.
The second wall-travelling crane is identical in design to the first but has some further special features. Two hoists travel on the upper flange of this crane – these are SH 6040-10 electric wire rope hoists, also with a lifting height of 6.0m, with doublegrooved rope drum and 4/2 reeving, which prevents lateral hook movement when lifting and lowering loads.
The hoists permit either single or tandem operation and thus offer a high degree of flexibility in use. Load aggregation with a safety programmable logic controller (PLC) is integrated for tandem operation. It permanently measures and monitors the loads on both crane hooks, ensuring that the permissible total load capacity of 8.0t is not exceeded. “In tandem operation, it is possible to transport longer tools more easily and position them more precisely. At the same time, the load is kept in a stable position on both hooks, which also prevents swinging of the load. In single operation the tools can in turn be turned and rotated safely,” explains Seibold. “In my view, load aggregation with a safety PLC is a certain selling point for Stahl wire rope hoists”
The cranes’ travel axis is also a special design. It consists of three crane runways on each side of the hall. Each crane has two frequency-controlled travel drives on the lower end carriage, which runs on the middle crane runway. With four-wheel blocks each, the very high-pressure forces are distributed evenly on the lower crane runway.
Finally, a crane distance control was installed on all cranes. A photo-electric barrier with optical sensors prevents accidental collision of two cranes in operation on one travel axis.
The car manufacturer was obviously very satisfied with the results of the project because having completed the first two wall-travelling cranes Haslinger received an order for the two additional ones, which are identical to the first solutions.
Kito Erikkila Supplies Finnish Shipyard
The Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland has a history that goes back almost 300 years. Today it is one of the world’s leading builders of cruise ships, specialising in complex, innovative and environmentally friendly vessels.
The shipyard is continuously developing its processes towards lean manufacturing methods. One project has been to bring T-beam production, for hulls, into its own hands, to manufacture them more flexibly with in the shipyard areas with their own production line.
The T-beams are transported step by step from one workstation to another throughout the production process, using a new light overhead crane system from Kito Erikkila.
Although it is a light crane, it is impressive. The length of the crane track is 75m, and the crane span is 7.5m. Moving the beams out from the production line is realised using a radio-controlled telescopic bridge, which allows the beams to be loaded to the reach of a forklift outside the support frame of the crane. Inverter drives, for both transfers and lifts, make moving from one station to another easier. Positioning of the pieces is precise and easy, which speeds up throughput. The installation schedule was tight but the entire project, from design to deployment, was completed in only two months

The grab bridge crane uses the grab as a lifting tool. During the preparation of raw materials in advance, it can perform unloading, stockpiling, clearing, loading, and feeding work. Grab bridge cranes are generally applicable to the lifting of general goods in various factories and mining enterprises. The customer purchased two QB explosion-proof double beam overhead cranes from our crane factory, one of which has a lifting capacity of 40 tons, a lifting height of 18 meters, and a span of 22 meters. The other has a lifting capacity of 85 tons, a lifting height of 19.7 meters, and a span of 21 meters. The order was placed in the factory on July 29th. On October 8th, the customer proposed a change request for the design of the car. On October 30th, the production tasks for all components were completed.
