Hand Hoist Inspection Checklist
Hand hoists allow workers to elevate and move large objects by utilizing a pulley system. These hand hoists are a low-cost solution for manufacturers or individuals who need to lift heavy objects without a lot of manpower or machinery. Inspect the Hand hoist periodically to ensure it’s safe to operate and properly maintained.
Mount
- The mount of a Hand hoist is critical to allow the hoist to elevate heavy objects manually. The mounting plate attached to an overhead beam or cross member should have no signs of wear, stretching or cracking. Check all mounting bolts to ensure they’re securely tightened and show no signs of bending or cracking. The overhead beams that the hoist mounts to should be visually inspected at the point of connection, as well as along its length and connection to other supports.
Wire Rope or Chains
- Hand hoists utilize chains or wire rope to operate the pulley system that lifts an object. A wire rope should show no signs of wear and have no wires fraying from the main line. Inspect individual chain links for cracking and signs of stretching. Weak areas of chain can be replaced by cutting bad link and welding in new ones. Wire rope that shows signs of excess wear should be entirely replaced.
Ratchet and Pulleys
- Inspecting and testing the ratchet-and-pulley system of a Hand hoist can prevent injuries and damage due to a product falling from the hoist. Check all the pulley wheels and gear wheels to ensure they’re symmetrical and not bent. Try to move the pulley wheels and gears side to side to ensure that they’re securely fastened to the main shaft and that the bearing is in good condition. Inspect the entire mechanism for proper lubrication, and remove any dirt and debris. Inspect the pawls, which lock the pulley system, for cracking and to ensure they’re straight: A bent pawl could prematurely release the pulley under a load.
Hook
- The hook and wire rope that attach to an object are placed under extreme stress and should be in optimum condition to prevent any failures. Inspect the rope for any fraying or signs of weakness near where it’s attached to the hook. Ensure that the steel hook has no cracking or stretch marks that make it unusable. It’s ideal for the hook to be a bright color to prevent people from running into it, which may cause serious injuries.
