Jib crane designs, jib crane parts & types of jib cranes comparison

Basics of jib cranes, jib cranes design, types of jib crane, jib cranes parts, and the comparisons of various different type of jib cranes for you to select the right jib crane at affordable price. Dongqicrane manufacturer.

Jib crane

A jib crane is widely used in small and medium workshop for repetitive and unique material handling works. Due to the versatility, jib cranes are usually used with eot overhead crane to maximize production.

Even though jib crane is simple in design, jib cranes can handle loads with capacity from 0.5 ton to 10 ton.

Jib cranes are very popular used in workshops for jib cranes can increase working efficiency, lower workplaces injuries and improving safety.

Jib Crane design & Jib crane components

For the majority of jib cranes, there is a very basic crane design and construction. Jib cranes are simple to operate and durable with low breakdown time compared with workshop cranes, overhead cranes, and gantry cranes.

Jib crane components and terms

  • Reach/Boom – the horizontal beam or arm or cantilever that the trolley with the electric / manual hoist travels on back and forth.
  • Mast/Pillar – the vertical beam or pillar or post used to support the boom on freestanding and mast systems
  • Movable Electric Hoist – the electric / manual hoist is used to lift up and down and transfer a load.
  • Trolley – the travelling trolley can be powered by motor or manual or, pneumatic, which carries crane hoists either chain hoist or wire rope hoist and the hook along the wire rope or along the entire length of the boom/ arm/ cantilever.
  • Rotation – on free standing jib cranes or pillar jib cranes and mast jib cranes, the rotation angle can be 360° of boom rotation. Wall travelling jib cranes, wall mounted jib crane and column-mounted jib cranes, the rotation angle can be 180-200°. .
  • Controls – Crane controls are used on motorized or air-powered jib systems, to control the rotation of the arm, and the movement of the trolley to lift up and down and travelling. The jib crane controls usually are push button controls and also the Multi-speed or variable speed controls are available.
  • Hook Height - The height which the loads will be lifted up
  • Rotation Stop –rotation stop is a devices to limit the crane’s motion before colliding with a nearby object or obstructions such as a wall, etc.
  • Environmental Considerations –Due to particular environment features, additional devices or features should be included in the design of jib cranes such as, resist corrosion features, explosion proof features, and heat, dust, dirt, or moisture resistant, etc.

Different Types of Jib Crane Systems

According to various crane designs, jib cranes can be grouped into different types, which can provide different capacities, advantages and disadvantages, etc. In the following, the main types of jib crane designs are presented for you to get the right jib cranes for your applications.

Pillar jib crane with free standing design

  • Pillar jib crane system can be used together with the overhead crane systems and also can be used in the open air independently.
  • Pillar jib crane called free standing jib crane is one of the most commonly used jib crane which can be installed indoor and outdoor.
  • The jib cranes can be used outdoors at marinas or loading docks, and indoors use for machining and assembly operations.

Freestanding pillar jib crane

The main parameters and specifications of Jib cranes are as following;

Types of pillar jib cranes

Main designs of pillar jib cranes can be grouped into three types according to the way of how it be mounted or installed.

Base-Plate Mounted Jib Crane Design

Base-Plate Mounted Jib Crane Design, which is one of the most common and easies way to install the free standing jib cranes. The pillar or mast of jib crane is bolted to a base plate which is fastened on the reinforced concrete foundation.

Foundation/Insert Mounted Jib Crane Design

Foundation/Insert Mounted Jib Crane Design: The foundation jib crane designs is to weld a steel plate at the bottom of the pillar or mast, which is anchored during the first-pour concrete footing, whereas, the pillar is supported by a second concrete pour with no need of gussets.

Sleeve-Insert Mounted Jib Crane Design

Sleeve-Insert Mounted Jib Crane Design: The jib crane sleeves with a welded steel plate is anchored by first pour concreted footing whereas, during the second pour, the pillar is and the pillar is in second inserted into the sleeve, leveled, and then welded in place. The sleeve insert mounted jib crane designs makes the relation of the jib cranes possible and at same time to keep the pillar with no damages.

Advantages of pillar jib cranes:

Free standing design, largest capacity, longest spans, and greatest rotation angle compared with other types of jib crane designs.

Disadvantages of pillar jib cranes

Most expensive jib crane systems compared with other jib crane designs

Permanent mounted solutions due to freestanding jib cranes are among the most expensive systems and the most special foundation that is required to anchor and secure the crane and support the load during a lift.

Foundationless Jib Cranes

Foundationless jib cranes is also belong to the group of free standing jib cranes. However, the jib crane is mounted on a slab bolted by 6" reinforced concrete for indoor use. The foundationless jib cranes can be installed everywhere in the facility as long as the location meets the requirements of the jib crane manufacturer for the These types of jib crane systems don't require a special poured foundation and can be installed almost anywhere in a facility as long as the area meets the requirements of the manufacturer.

Due to the foundationless design, the jib cranes of this types can be installed easier and faster, and also can be relocated within a facility.

Advantages of foundationless jib cranes are cost-effectiveness, and high portability, and wide applications. Disadvantages of foundationless free jib cranes are they have a much lower capacity than typical freestanding jib cranes with a poured foundation.
